At about one year of age she moved with her parents and siblings to a home neat Sparks Nebraska. Her father died when she was 4 years old, putting a real hardship on her mother and 5 other young children during the drought and depression years of the 30s. She attended a country grade school. Gertrude enjoyed growing flowers and gardening, and did lots of canning and freezing of fruits and vegetables over the years. Other favorite pastimes were reading, playing cards and visiting family and friends. She especially liked making desserts with different people remarking that they were very good. She enjoyed her outings with her Red Hat friends.
Her family meant so much to her, which she showed by making each one of her children a large photo album. She liked to travel and has been to all the states except one; as well as to England, Germany, Czech Republic, Canada, Mexico and some countries on a cruise to the Panama Canal. After the death of her husband, Leo in 2004, she continued to do the business part of the ranch with her son Robert doing the work.
