Curtis A. Hughes son of Charles and Maple (Rhoades) Hughes was born in White River, South Dakota on September 24, 1932. He attended elementary school in White River and graduated from Valentine High School. Curt served his country in the United States Navy. He was inducted May 28, 1951 and was honorably discharged May 23, 1955.

Curt married Alice M. Peters on December 5, 1953 in Council Bluffs, IA. This union was blessed with four children. Curt worked as a Qwest cable locator and also as a delivery man for UPS. He was a member of V.F.W. and American Legion. Curt loved sports and enjoyed basketball, baseball, golf and bowling. He volunteered as a coach and umpired baseball games for a number of years.

Curt passed away August 22, 2012 at Cherry County Hospital. He was preceded in death by his parents Charles & Maple Hughes, wife Alice Hughes who passed away March 24, 1997, brothers Calvin, Delano, David, Donald and Edward and sisters Laura, Viola and Luella. Survivors include children Tony Hughes of Valentine, Lyn Spall of Brush, CO, Becky Danielski of Valentine and Cindy Keller of Mobridge, SD. Sisters Dorothy Elsasser of Hot Springs, SD, Pat Childress of Lawrence, KS, and Ronnie Hughes Sr. of North Platte, NE. Also surviving are grandchildren Jarod, Kyle, & Emilee Hughes, Patrick Spall, Leslie McGrory, Chris, Jenny, and Andy Danielski, James, & Nicole Poland, Katelyn, & Patrick Keller, and great grandchildren Jonathan Lawrence, Aivah, & Sophia McGrory, and Evan, & Kira Hughes.

Funeral service for Curtis Hughes was held Monday, August 27, 2012 at the Berean Church in Valentine. Pastor Dave Householter officiated at the 10:00 service. Burial followed at Mount Hope Cemetery in Valentine. Sandoz Chapel of the Pines was entrusted with the funeral arrangements.
