Obituary

Dale Homer Lovejoy, Jr., (DH III), was born in Valentine, NE, on August 7th, 1944, to Dale Homer Lovejoy, Sr., (Irish) and Marie Ellen Hewitt Lovejoy. He was raised in SD and NE.

DH grew up in the Valentine, NE, Philip, Vetal, and Mission, SD areas. He attended high school at the University of Nebraska School of Agriculture in Curtis, NE, and graduated in 1962. He represented Nebraska in a national range-judging contest in Oklahoma in 1962. He received a football scholarship from Doane University in Crete, NE, where he attended for 2 years. He transferred to the University of South Dakota at Vermillion, SD, and majored in business administration. After graduation in 1966, he was hired as an accountant by General Electric Company in Milwaukee, WI.

He met his first wife, Cheryl Darleen Dott, from Milwaukee, and they were married in 1967. They had a son, Dean Howard Lovejoy (DH IV). DH was transferred to Louisville, Kentucky by General Electric Co. A family decision was made to relocate back to Milwaukee thus necessitating a change in employment. DH became employed as a chief operating officer at RIte-Hite Corporation in Milwaukee. He and Cheryl had a son, Jason Scott Lovejoy. DH and Cheryl were divorced in 1980.

DH married Joan Helen Klingbeil in 1981. They lived in Germantown, WI, for several years. He was then transferred from Milwaukee to Atlanta, GA, where he was operations manager for Arbon Equipment Corporation, a subsidiary of Rite-Hite Corporation. He worked there for a number of years. He then took a position as a tax auditor at Gwinnett County Tax Assessors' Office for several years until he retired.

DH and Joan retired in Palmetto, FL, and lived there for 11 years. He and his wife both became seriously ill and in July 2021 moved into assisted living in Sarasota, FL. In December 2021, his wife Joan passed away. In February of 2022, he moved to Phoenix, AZ, and lived with his sister Kitty Lovejoy until his passing on January 3, 2023, at the age of 78.

DH was an avid sports fan, loved his family, and enjoyed trips home to Valentine and SD to spend time with all his extended Lovejoy and Hewitt families. Both he and his wife Joan loved living in the Tampa area and enjoyed bird watching, watching the boat activity at the marina daily from their balcony, and enjoying the Florida weather. He followed a strict regimen of walking/running around the pond and through the neighborhood every day and gym workouts three times a week, a routine he had followed most of his adult life. He and his wife were active on the board of the condominium association of which he was the treasurer.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Dan & Leona Lovejoy, Lucius and Hazel Hewitt of Valentine; his parents, Irish & Marie Lovejoy of Phoenix, AZ; his brother Lloyd Lovejoy and sister-in-law Barbara Lovejoy of Winner, SD. He is survived by his two sons, Dean and Jason Lovejoy, of Milwaukee, WI; his sister, Kitty Lovejoy, of Phoenix, AZ; his nephew Jay Lovejoy of Winner; his niece Martie Ryno of Wood, SD; and his niece Nicole Bertram of Colome, SD.
