Lawrence Don Junod was born July 10, 1928 to Lawrence and Edna Kime Junod at Mullen NE. He died September 9, 2015 at his daughter's home near Elwood, after a brief battle with cancer.
Don attended Valentine High School graduating in 1945. He joined the Army in July 1946 and served 3 years, mostly in Japan. Don was united in marriage to Ilene Hagedorn in 1952 in Valentine. He worked as a painter, as a mechanic for Miller Bros. and then was employed at the Harold Harms Ranch for 18 years where they raised their three children, Connie, Cathie and Richard. They resided in the Valentine area until 1977. They moved to Bertrand, NE where he worked for Don Hanson farming and ranching. They returned to Valentine in 1987. After returning to the Valentine area, Don worked for Crookston Grain and with Wayne Porath at Green Thumb Nursery.
Don was active at the Senior Center where he served as a board member. He also served on the Historical Society Board. He belonged to the VFW and enjoyed fishing, playing pool and cards, and pitching horseshoes. He loved working crossword puzzles, wearing out many puzzle dictionaries.
Don was preceded in death by wife Ilene; parents; brothers, Ernest, Glen and Russell, and sister, Lucy Isom Reddington. He is survived by his daughters, Connie Burdick of Elwood and Cathie (Doug) Pankowski of Ainsworth and son, Richard of Edison, two grandsons, Tucker (Tarijo) Pankowski of Custer, SD and Jesse Pankowski of Elwood, four great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.
Memorials may be made to the Valentine Senior Center or the donor's choice.
Memorial service for Don Junod age 87 of Valentine will be held on Tuesday, 15 at 11:00 AM at Sandoz Chapel of the Pines in Valentine. Inurnment will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery in Valentine. Mr. Junod passed away on Sept. 9 in Lexington.
