Memorial service for Don Parkhurst age 92 of Valentine will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 13 th at 11:00 AM at the United Methodist Church in Valentine. Register book signing with family present will be on Tuesday, Feb. 12 th from 5 to 7 PM at Sandoz Chapel of the Pines in Valentine. Mr. Parkhurst passed away on Feb 6th at the Cherry Co. Hospital.
Donald LeRoy Parkhurst, oldest son of LeRoy and Susan Holmes Parkhurst was born in Berwyn, Nebraska on October 18, 1926. Don passed away on February 6, 2019 at Cherry County Hospital in Valentine, NE.
Don attended grade school in Custer County and high school in Cairo, Nebraska. He was drafted into the army the last semester of eleventh grade. He served with the 3194 th Engineers Base Depot in Bremen, Germany and requisitioned supplies while there.
Don returned to the states in December 1946 and went to work on the Minor Ranch south of Merriman. While there, he met and married Caroline Knudsen on May 9, 1952. To this union three children were born, Donetta in 1953, Danita in 1955 and Robert in 1957.
Don was a rancher for many years of his life. He worked on the Cross Five, Doug Borman Ranch, and the Kenneth Simmons Ranch. Don was proud of the high school diploma he received through the GED exams in the 1970's. After retiring from ranching, Don managed the Vets Club and owned the Social Club in Valentine. He also worked for Don Abraham and the Comfort Inn.
Don's love for his family and everyone he came into contact with was evident through his ever-present smile, teasing and generosity. He never met a stranger. He served his country with pride, worked hard to provide for his family and lived life to the full until the last two weeks of his life. He loved a game of cribbage and time spent with his "second family" at the Vets Club.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Caroline, his parents, Leroy and Susan, brothers, Darrel and Walter, and sister, Darlene Lewis.
He is survived by his children, Donetta (Leland) Monroe of Tok, AK, Danita (Duane) Kime of Valentine, Rob (Janet) Parkhurst of Cody, grandchildren, Scott (Natalie) Monroe, Carri (John) Hallock, Tracy Carpenter, Jon (Rachel) Kime, Nicole (Paul) Hotz, Zane (Anna) Parkhurst and great-grand children, Mindy and Marissa Monroe, Gabriel, Joshua, Caleb and Mikayla Hallock, Braydon Carpenter, Millie Jo and Jubal Kime, Nevaeh, Will and Austin Hotz, and Edson and Anora Parkhurst.
He is also survived by his sister and husband Deloris and Bob Hutton and a host of relatives and friends.
