Fredrick "fred" Ray Purdum age 84 of Valentine passed away on Thursday, Sept. 4 at the Cherry County Hospital in Valentine.
Fred was born Sept. 8, 1929 in Whitman, NE to Earl and Fredia (Cook) Purdum. He graduated from Seneca High School in 1948, after graduation he went directly into the Marine Corps. He served in the Korean War and was a highly decorated Marine, earning the National Defense Service Medal, Korean War Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, China Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, United Nations Medal and he was injured, earning him the Purple Heart.
In 1949 he married LaVone Gier. Fred worked for the Nebraska Brand Commission for 28 Years.
Fred is survived by his wife LaVone of Valentine; Son, Terry and wife Wanda of Mullin, NE and Lyle and wife Sheilia of Bennett, NE; three grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.
Memorial graveside service for Fred was held on Friday, Sept. 19 at 2:00 PM at Ft. McPherson National Cemetery in Maxwell, NE. Sandoz Chapel of the Pines in Valentine was entrusted with service arrangements.
