Obituary

Gail Everett Haas of Valentine, NE went to be with the Lord on November 18th, 2024, just 5 days short of his 93rd birthday. He was the fourth of six children born to Clarence and Alma Haas on November 23rd, 1931 near Lakeview, SD.  Gail was born again of water and the Spirit when he was baptized into the holy Christian church on September 4, 1932. Gail was confirmed as a member of the Christian Lutheran church on June 29, 1947, at Calvary Evangelical Lutheran Church.  His confirmation memory verse was Proverbs23:26 - "My son, give me your heart and let your eyes keep to my ways."  Gail's early life consisted of working on the family farm alongside his dad and siblings raising various livestock. This is where his deep love for working on the ranch began.

Gail was drafted into the Army in 1952.  He went to Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri with his good friend, Dan May. They returned home in 1954 with lots of memories made and stories to tell.  In 2021, Gail was honored to receive a quilt from Quilts of Valor for his years of service.

Gail married Lorain Porath on December 15th, 1957 in Valentine, NE where they spent the entirety of their marriage. He started working at Spelts Lumbar, and then spent most of his working career at Ohlmann Building Center as a sales manager. While working there, he started building sheds and buying property, which led to his next business venture, Gail and Lorain Haas Rentals. He took pride in his properties, building everything extra sturdy. As most people know, where one nail was needed, he often put three. After retirement, Gail continued to work on all of his rental properties as long as he was able.

Gail had a big heart. He loved and cared for his family, friends, renters, and even the stray cats in the back alley.  He enjoyed traveling with his wife, camping, hunting, and listening to country western music, but his favorite pastime of all was fishing. Gail was happiest on the lake, enjoying good conversations with friends while casting a line.

Gail was preceded in death by his wife, Lorain, his parents, Clarence and Alma, his 3 brothers, Lyle, Leland and Larry, and a sister, Gwendolyn Holmes.  He is survived by a sister, Sharon Swett of Leadville, CO, nieces, nephews and many others who loved him dearly.

Memorial funds honoring Gail Haas will be directed to Norfolk Veteran's Home and Zion Lutheran church.
