Glen Huddle passed away on June 29, 2026, in Yankton, SD at the age of 97. Glen was born at home in Millboro, SD on October 27, 1928, and grew up on a cattle ranch in South Central South Dakota homesteaded by his father in 1925.
Glen had fond childhood memories of watching his father raise cattle and break wild horses and of fishing in the creek with his mom. He attended rural Beaver Creek School from first through tenth grade. He rode his horse several miles to school and when there were snowstorms, would stay the night at school.
Glen attended high school in Winner, SD his junior and senior year. He took up boxing and was quite good at it. He attended college for one year in Yankton, SD. His love of the ranch brought him back home. He would say that there wasn’t anything else he wanted to do.
Like most farmers and ranchers, Glen didn’t have hobbies. He did enjoy playing cards and it was through this pastime that he met Darlene Steele. They met in 1950, at a Friday night card party in the basement of St. Anne’s church, The game of the night was Pitch. Everyone drew for partners and if you won, you advanced to another table and changed partners, always advancing towards the head table. It so happened Glen and Darlene got to the head table at the same time and remained partners until the party ended.
Glen was in the Air Force at the time and was stationed in Cheyenne, so Glen and Darlene were married May 31, 1952, in Cheyenne, WY. Their wonderful example of love and commitment for 73 years was a beautiful thing to witness. Their marriage was blessed with three children: Glenda, Jane, and Randy.
Glen will be remembered for his quiet sense of humor, his work ethic, and his deep love of his children and grandchildren.
Glen was preceded in death by his wife, Darlene (Steele) Huddle, parents Forest and Eva Huddle, and sibling Florence May.
Glen is survived by children Glenda (Huddle) Bakke and husband Dale, Jane (Huddle) Megrdle and husband Phil, Randy Huddle and wife Linda; eight grandchildren, and 19 great-grandchildren.
Memorial Mass for Glen Huddle, age 77 of Valentine will be held on Saturday, July 11, 2026, at 10:30 AM at St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Valentine. A meal will be served following the Mass with burial to follow the meal at St. Boniface Cemetery at Clearfield, SD. A Rosary will be recited on Friday, July 10 at 7:00 PM at the church.
