James Richard Butler "Doc" passed away in his home at Cherry Hills Estates, Sunday, January 21, 2018.  The oldest of four boys to Willis and Clyda (Fouts) Butler, he was born January 5, 1932 in Harveyville, Kansas.

Growing up in rural Kansas, Jim knew at an early age he wanted to be a veterinarian.  He was valedictorian of his high school class and graduated from Kansas State University in Veterinary Medicine in 1956.  After graduation he served our country as a Captain in the Air Force for two years.
On November 3, 1957 he and Karen (Burtis) were married in Manhattan, Kansas.  They moved to Valentine, Nebraska in 1960 to pursue his life long dream of establishing a veterinary practice.   Soon after, they had three children, Joe, Elisabeth, and Susan and the sandhills became their home for the next 57 years, and recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.
Professionally, Doc was a lifetime member of the National Veterinary Medical Association and the Nebraska Veterinary Association. He was a Past President of the Valentine Rotary and the Jaycees.  He served 15 years on school board and in later years served on the Library Board. He was also an Elder in the Presbyterian Church.
Doc supported his beloved community in many ways. From helping establish the local golf courses, to the youth in 4H, from the Sandhills Area Foundation to one of his favorite  "CAN DO" (Christians Assisting Neighbors Doing Good) project, he was All IN.  He was a supportive team member and effective leader and had one heck of a laugh. He enjoyed raising and showing chinchillas.  He liked to hunt, ice fish, and play cards, and was a regular on the golf course.
Survivors are his wife Karen, brothers Vern (Wanda), David (Irma), and Jack (Nancy). Son Joe (Janet Wood), daughter Susan (Patrick Schwartz). Grandchildren, Ryan Butler, Brianna Butler Mulligan, Sarah Butler, Trish Bruno, James Bruno and Great Grandchild Harper Mulligan along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Doc is preceded in death by his parents , Willis and Clyda and his cherished daughter, Elisabeth.
