Obituary

John Barber Fischer was born May 26, 1943 in Lincoln, Nebraska to Bill and Edna Fischer. He passed away at the age of 70 years on April 5, 2014 at home in Valentine surrounded by family.

Early life home started at the Sunny Slope Ranch in Cherry County. His early years growing up included loving parents, ranch life and country school.

J.B. attended Wentworth Military Academy in Lexington, MO. He graduated in 1961. After high school he attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

On May 26, 1965, J.B. married Patricia Watts Fischer. This marriage and dear friendship lasted 39 years until Pat's death in 2005. To this union were born four children, Sam, Will, Tricia, and infant son Jess who died at birth.

Immediately after they were married, Pat and J.B. moved to Fort Dix, New Jersey. J.B. served in the army in Korea for a year, before moving to Travis Air Force Base, California where he completed his military service. Pat and J.B. returned to the Powder Horn Ranch in 1967.

After Pat's death, J.B. met and married Sherry Harding Kleven who had grown up in Valentine and lived in Simi Valley, CA for 36 years until her husband died. She visited friends in Valentine and met J.B. They married in 2006 and made Valentine their home.

J.B. was a special person to many people. His style of humor and unpredictability delighted all who knew him. He was truly one of a kind. He enjoyed caring for his beautiful Niobrara property and had a deep admiration for wild life, nature, good cattle, good land, and good water. He enjoyed traveling the world.

J.B. always kept busy with his never ending to do lists, his daily trips to town and visiting with friends. He loved his family and spending time with his grandkids.

He was a proud member of Rotary and was pleased to serve as President. He was a longtime member of the Masonic Lodge. Many organizations and individuals were the beneficiaries of his anonymous generosity.

J.B. was preceded in death by his parents, wife Pat, and infant son Jess Barber Fischer.

He is survived by his wife Sherry of Valentine; children Sam and Heather Fischer of Omaha, Will and Gina Fischer of Nenzel, Tricia and Steve King of Denver, and Randy and Lauri Kleven of Enterprise, AL. Grandchildren Grant and Hanna Fischer of Nenzel, Madison Kleven of Boise, ID, and Delaney Kleven of Auburn, AL. Brother, Bruce and Deb Fischer of Valentine, and sister Nadine and John McHenry of Lincoln

Funeral service for JB Fischer age 70 of Valentine will be held on Thursday, April 10 at 2:00 PM at the Presbyterian Church in Valentine. Burial will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery in Valentine. Visitation will begin at 3:30 on Wednesday at Sandoz Chapel of the Pines in Valentine.
