Funeral Mass for John Engel 78, will be held at 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, March 26th at St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Valentine.  Burial will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery.  Rosary will be held at 7:00 P.M. Tuesday evening at St. Nicholas


John Joseph Engel was born September 26, 1935 in Valentine, NE. He was the third of seven children born to Mary Elizabeth (Boltsz) Engel and Joseph George Engel. John received his early education in a rural school and then attended and graduated from Curtis School of Agriculture. He also furthered his education at McCook Jr. College.

John married Audrey Fichtner on March 8, 1956 in McCook, NE. They were blessed when their son James was born. John served his country in the United Stated Army. He was inducted on January 9, 1957 and was honorably discharged on December 17, 1958. John was a rancher and managed the family ranch for many years. He was a skilled carpenter and enjoyed working on many projects. John was a member of St. Nicholas Catholic Church, American Legion and V.F.W.

John passed away March 22, 2014 at Ainsworth Care Center at age 78. He was preceded in death by his parents Joseph and Mary Engel and brothers George and Robert. He is survived by wife Audrey of Valentine, son James and wife Diane of Waverly, NE, grandsons Tyler Engel of Arlington VA, and Trenton Engel of Waverly, NE. Also surviving are sisters Mary Young, Joyce Colvin, and Jo Reagan all of Valentine and Pat Schubauer of Blaqck Hawk, SD, sister-in-law Lee Engel of Greeley, CO, and several nieces and nephews.
