Lois Irene Schmidt was born November 23, 1933 to George and Mildred Schmidt at the farm in Todd County, South Dakota. She attended Midway Grade School and graduated from Winner High School in 1952.

Lois married Johnny Lien on May 1, 1955. They made their home in the Littleburg area of South Dakota and ranched in this area until 1963 when they bought a ranch and moved to Keya Paha County in the Springview area. John and Lois were blessed with 5 children, Rick, Ron, Debra, Russ and David.

Lois worked on the ranch and raised her children. When the youngest was in high school she started working at the Springview Bank. She retired from the bank in 1998.
Lois was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, G.A.G Extension Club, Grace Lutheran Church, LWML and 4-H Leader for many years. John and Lois retired from ranching and moved to Valentine in 2008. Lois passed away on Jan. 30, 2017 at her home. She was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Dean, Jerry and Dewey and sisters, Arlene and June.

She is survived by her children, sons, Rick (Deb) of Hemingford, NE, Ron (Michelle) of Minatare, NE, Russ (Jess) of Aguanga, CA, Dave (Chris) of Valentine, NE and Deb (Duane) Witte of Valentine, NE; also surviving is a special sister-in-law, Betty Rodgers of Valentine, 9 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
Funeral service was held on Saturday, Feb. 4 at 2:00 PM at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Valentine. Burial followed at Mount Hope Cemetery in Valentine. Sandoz Chapel of the Pines was in charge of service arrangements.
