IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Mabel Louise
Adamson
January 15, 1927 – June 7, 2025
Mabel Louise (Gale) Adamson, of Valentine, NE, passed away on June 7, 2025, at Rock County Long Term Care in Bassett, NE, at the age of 98. She was the beloved wife of the late Elvin Adamson. She was also a cherished sister, mother, and grandmother.
Mabel was born on January 15, 1927, to Edson A. Gale and Jessie M. (Eskew) Gale on the Gale Ranch south of Cody, NE. She grew up as one of eight children and often enjoyed sharing stories from her ranch childhood, much to the delight of her grandchildren.
She attended a one-room rural school at Cutcomb Lake, graduated from high school in Valentine, NE, and later earned her teaching certificate. Mabel taught in a rural school in the Sandhills, often traveling by horseback each day to teach.
On June 11, 1947, she married Elvin Adamson. Together, they raised four children—Cheryl, Janie, Marge, and Marvin—on the Adamson ranch outside of Nenzel. Mabel always considered herself a "country girl" and was happiest living the ranch life. Yet she gracefully adapted to change during Elvin's years of public service, as he served in local, state, and national office—including his time as Speaker of the Nebraska Legislature and as U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of Agriculture. Mabel was his strongest supporter, managing many family moves to different homes, schools, and cities—from Cody to Valentine to Lincoln to Washington, DC.
Mabel will be remembered for her warmth, happy outlook, deep kindness, and strong faith. She enjoyed gardening, reading, and, above all, spending time with her family. Even at 98, she remained mentally sharp and was the family's "go-to" source for Sandhills history.
She is survived by her children Cheryl (John) Ravenscroft of Nenzel, Janie (Bob) Bennett of Valentine, Marge (Blaine) Harris of Lincoln, and Marvin (Michelle) Adamson of Nenzel; nine grandchildren; twenty-six great-grandchildren; her sisters Wilma (Joe) Andrews and Beverly Dodson; and many other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband Elvin, her parents, her brother Edson Gale, her sisters Manota Tate, Ruby Lord, Jessie Wobig, and Helen Ford, and her grandchildren Emily and Tyler Harris.
Memorials may be directed to the family for future designation.
