Norma L. Bartlett was born on Nov. 22, 1935, in Springview, NE. She was the youngest of nine children born to Thomas & Mabel (Sharp) Brown. She passed away on Sept. 6, 2016, at her home with her children by her side.
She attended school in Springview and graduated valedictorian from Keya Paha County High School in 1953. After graduation she attended teachers' college and taught rural schools in Keya Paha and Brown counties.
She was united in marriage to Glen M. Bartlett on Dec. 11, 1956, in Valentine, NE. To this union four children were born. The first four years of their marriage they lived in Rapid City, SD, where Lynette and Michael were born. In 1960, they moved to Valentine where Douglas and Bethany were born.
Norma worked in the bookkeeping department of the First National Bank for approximately six years, followed by one year at the Cherry County Superintendent of Schools Office. In 1976, Norma began her career at the Cherry County Physician's clinic in billing and medical records. She was employed there for 36 years until she retired on Oct.13, 2011, at age 75.
Norma was baptized into the Seventh-day Adventist Church on June 28, 1947, at the age of 12. Her faith was an essential part of her life and character. She was the church pianist for several decades starting at a young age. She helped bring many hearts closer to the Lord through teaching children's Sabbath School classes and Vacation Bible School in her younger years, and most recently while attending a women's study group. The manner in which she lived quietly displayed her faith in Jesus and set an example for her family and others.
She was proceeded in death by her parents, her husband, Glen, and infant son, Douglas. Also preceding her in death were brothers Gerald, Clifford, and Willard Brown; sisters Eva Brown, Virginia Grooms, and Hazel Lolley.
She is survived by her three children: Lynette Olson and her husband Gerald of Lincoln, NE; Michael Bartlett and wife Beverly of Chadron, NE; and Bethany Lopez and her husband Kent of Valentine, NE. Five grandchildren: Nicole (Matthew) Orian; Angela (Timothy) Heam; Dustin (Pamela) Bartlett; Tyler (Nikki) Bartlett; and Sophie Lopez. Eight great grandchildren: Jacob, Hailey, and Madison Orian; Abigail, Allison, and Alexander Heam; and Finn and Grace Bartlett. Other survivors include sisters Delores Castle of Chappell, NE; Carmelita Edwards of Scottsbluff, NE; sister-in-law Barbara Brown of Tabor, IA; and in-laws from Glen's family.
Funeral services were held on Monday, Sept. 12, 2016, at the United Methodist Church in Valentine, NE, with pastor Fred Grant officiating. Interment followed at Mount Hope Cemetery. Sandoz Chapel of the Pines was in charge of the arrangements. A memorial has been established to the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Valentine and the American Cancer
