Funeral service for Norma Schulz age 90 of Valentine will be held on Saturday, Jan. 5 at 2:00 PM at the Berean Church in Valentine. Visitation will be on Fri starting at 2:00 PM at Sandoz Chapel of the Pines in Valentine.
Norma Mae Ryschon Schulz was born June 9, 1922 in Cherry County, Valentine, NE to Joseph and Rena Belle (Dickinson) Ryschon. Her mother died, when she was 3 years old. Norma's aunt, Elizabeth Ryschon Jelly and her husband, Thaddeus took she and her sister, 18 month old Lois, to live with them in Tuthill, South Dakota. She stayed with the Jelly family through the 8th grade. Norma attended Lakeview High School for one year. She stayed at Mrs. William's boarding house and Honor Borman's home, cleaning their homes while attending High School in Valentine. She was also an usher at the Jewel Theater and cleaned house for Harold & Hazel Dunn, owners of the Jewel Theater in Valentine. Norma graduated with the class of 1940.
Norma married Homer P. Schulz in June of 1942. They lived in Omaha, where she worked at Sears & Roebuck Store for a short time and then worked for Mutual Benefit Life Insurance Co. for six years, while Homer attended school in Omaha.
Norma liked to sew, play the piano and the organ and garden. She was able to visit the Holy Land in Israel with a cousin, Kathryn Jelly Spragg. The Berean Church was organized in Norma and Homer's Valentine living room in 1959. She loved every phase of church work, and was a very active member of the Berean Church in Valentine.
She helped her husband, Homer operate a radio repair shop at Yeast Hardware and then opened their own repair and TV sales shop on the corner of 3rd and Main St in Valentine until 1977, when they sold the business and retired..
She was preceded in death by her parents, by her husband, Homer, three brothers Francis, Bernard, Robert and sister, Lois Neece. She is survived by twin half-sisters Karon Reynolds of Kimball, NE and Sharon Kaplan of Bridgeport, NE, cousins and many nieces and nephews. Norma passed away at Pine View Nursing Home and was welcomed into heaven on December 31, 2012.
