PH Young was born on March 14, 1926 to Phylander and Stella (Crowe) Young. He attended elementary school at the Ralph Baker ranch south of Valentine and graduated from Valentine High School. He was drafted into the Army and served until receiving a medical discharge. PH then returned home where he met and married Beverly Louise Hall on November 22, 1948. They lived on Gordon Valley Ranch which was established in 1902. They raised four children; Patricia, Paul, Roger, and Phyllis.
In his younger years, PH was an avid pilot and owned several different planes. He also spent many years teaching youth as a 4-H leader. PH became a Mason and received his 50 year pin in 1998. In 2011, he received the Bronze Jordan Medal for the longest living active Mason in the Minnekadusa Lodge 192. PH was a lifelong member of the Sandhills Cattle Association and president of the District 5 School Board for over 20 years. He was also a very active member of the Cherry County Fair Board.
His pastime hobbies included leather tooling, calligraphy, and later in life, genealogy. PH and Beverly traveled many miles and spent years collecting information on the Young and Crowe families. His most recent hobby was collecting and restoring antique tools. He took great pride in his collection, winning Best of Show at the Cherry County Fair several times. One of his biggest joys was showing his collection to any and all visitors.
