Obituary

Richard "Dick" Wayne Tetherow, a true pioneer in agriculture and a devoted family man, passed away on June 5, 2025, in Lincoln, Nebraska. Born on December 28, 1939, to Edith and Howard Tetherow in Valentine, Nebraska, Dick's life was deeply rooted in the land he loved.

Dick was raised on the Tetherow ranch south of Valentine and attended high school in Curtis, Nebraska. It was there he met his beloved "bride," Janice Moreland. They were united in marriage on March 21, 1959, in Imperial, Nebraska. Their 66 years of marriage produced a beautiful family, with the birth of their children: Bart (Beth), Sam (Shannon), and Nicole (Dan).

A man of intellect and dedication, Dick graduated from the University of Nebraska with a Bachelor of Science in Ag Engineering. He was pursuing his master's degree when unforeseen circumstances called him home. Following his father's unexpected passing, Dick returned to the family ranch, continuing the legacy alongside his mother, Edith, and brothers Don and Doug.

Dick was a visionary in the agricultural world. He was a pioneer in introducing Simmental cattle to the United States and took immense pride in his Simmental herd. His commitment led him to serve a term as president of the American Simmental Association. His expertise extended internationally when he spent a year in Hungary, assisting the country in its transition from communist agriculture. With a talent for numbers and agriculture, he also became a commodity broker. For the last 15 years, Dick managed Moreland Farms, applying techniques he learned from his father-in-law, George Moreland. He developed a deep passion for organic farming and was instrumental in the design and formation of Niobrara Grain and Milling.

Beyond his professional achievements, Dick's greatest joy came from his family. He spent countless hours on the road, traveling to support his cherished grandchildren: Colbi, Courtney, Amanda, Dani, Noah, Hope, Zach, Asher, Elizabeth, and Emma.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents, Edith and Howard Tetherow; his sister, Beverly Konings; his brothers, Doug and Don Tetherow; and his grandson, Joseph Tetherow.

Mass of Christian Burial to be held Tuesday, June 10th at 10 a.m. at St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Valentine, Nebraska, with Father Sean Kilcawley officiating. Interment will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery in Valentine. Visitation Monday, June 9th, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. with the Rosary immediately following at the church.

Memorials may be made in the care of the family with designation at a later date.
