Roberta Jean (Lawlis) Sherman was born In Ainsworth, NE on February 17, 1932, to Albert Thomas and Freda Mary (Tate) Lawlis. She received her early education in Cherry County rural schools and then attended Valentine High School and graduated with the class of 1949. After graduating she attended Chadron State College for 12 weeks and received a certificate to teach third grade. She taught school for one year at Younkin – Wright school.
Roberta married Hugh Sherman on August 20, 1949 in Valentine at her Grandmother Tate's home. They were blessed with nine children. Roberta lived all but 5 of her 84 years on the home place.
Roberta was a member of Sandhill Chapter D.A.R., Brownlee Woman's Club and American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed traveling and went to Calgary, Alberta area where her dad worked for several years; and Nova Scotia where her Grandfather Tate originated. She was also able to visit her sister-in-law in Kodiak, Alaska.
Roberta passed away June 6, 2016 at Pioneer Memorial Nursing Home in Mullen, NE. She is survived by children Blaine Arlen, Galen Roy, Frances Mary Vasa, Myra Jean Boje, Neva Joyce Sherman, Sally Margaret Ruelas, and Starla Nadine Jackson, sisters Mary Carolyn Schott and Vicki Helen Harris. She is also survived by 18 grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. Preceding her in death were her parents, husband Hugh, 2 sons; Gary and Frank, 4 grandsons; Rocky & Tyson Sherman, Kevin Vasa and Taylor Finnley, 2 sons-in-law, and Terry Vasa and Dick Boje, sisters Mary Schott and Vicki Harris.
Memorial service will be held on Thursday, June 16 at 2:00 PM at the United Church of Christ in Thedford. Sandoz Chapel of the Pines is in charge of service arrangements.
