Obituary
Shirley Ann (Rauer) Hand, 78, ascended to Heaven on Wednesday, March 27, 2013. She was a resident of Good Samaritan Society in Valentine, Nebraska, at the time of her passing.
Shirley was born outside Kilgore, Nebraska, on July 30, 1934, to Harold and Lillian Rauer. She was the oldest of six children. Shirley graduated in May, 1952, from Kilgore High School. She worked at First National Bank in Valentine until her marriage to Richard (Dick) Hand on March 15, 1955, in Kilgore. To this union, three children were born; Debbie, Tim and Tracy. After living in Clovis, New Mexico and Chadron, Nebraska, they settled their family back in Kilgore. She enjoyed working at Kilgore State Bank for many years. They moved to Valentine in 1978 where Shirley was a secretary at Valentine High School. She was loved by many students, faculty and co-workers. Her office was always festive with decorations for whatever activity or holiday that was currently at hand. In 1984, they moved to Arizona where they lived until 2006, when they moved back to Valentine.
Shirley was baptized at age nine. In her early adult life, she taught Sunday School and vacation Bible School. She devoted her free time to her church family. She loved spending time with her family, doing word searches, playing cards, writing letters, and eating out. She also enjoyed traveling to Nebraska to visit family. Her true passion in life was spending time with her husband. She cherished each and everyday with him.
Shirley is survived by her husband, Dick of Valentine, NE. Her children, Debbie of Chapman, NE, Tim (Jo) and Tracy (Kay) all of Valentine, NE. Her grandchildren include Chris Schmit, Charity Smigielski, Cortney Hand, Amber Hand, Tim Hand Jr., Tyler Hand, Jordan Hand, Chelsy Hand, Jacob Hand, Angie Erickson, Justin Hand and Jeromy Hand and eleven great-grandchildren. Also surviving are her siblings Patty (Kenneth) Ernesti of Carter Lake, Iowa, Dorine Rauer of Valentine, Wayne (Jeri) Rauer of Laramie Wyoming and brother-in-law Dean Welker of Kilgore, and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings Eldine Welker and Larry Rauer.
Services were held Monday, April 1, 2013 at the First Baptist Church of Valentine. Inurnment followed at the Kilgore Cemetery. Memorials may be given, in her name, to the family in care of Tracy Hand - 90503 Fishberry Rd –Valentine, NE 69201
