Funeral service for Walt Witt age 85 of Valentine, will be held on Saturday, Feb. 16 th at 11:00 AM at St. John's Episcopal Church in Valentine. Burial will follow at the Ainsworth South Cemetery. Visitation will be on Friday, Feb. 15 th at 5:00 PM at Sandoz Chapel of the Pines. Mr. Witt passed away on Feb. 7 th at Pine View in Valentine.
Walter Eugene Witt, Jr. was born June 22, 1933 in Ainsworth, Nebraska to Walter and Grace (Tays) Witt. He was the second born of 7 children. He attended school in Ainsworth, where he played football for the Bulldogs and graduated in 1950 at the age of 16.
Walt married the love of his life, Carol Thompson, on February 15, 1953 at St John's Episcopal Church in Valentine. To this union 4 children were born: Cynthia Ann in 1953, Mary Elizabeth in 1954, Cathy Marie in 1957, and Dale Eugene in 1960. Walt and Carol were members of the Episcopal Church.
Walt joined the army on December 7, 1955. During his time in the service, the family lived in Fairbanks, Alaska, as well as the California cities of Lancaster and Palmdale. Walt loved to travel and share those experiences with his family. They took family vacations to places like Knotts Berry Farm, Yosemite National Park, and Disney Land on numerous occasions. After leaving the army in October 1957, he went to work for Thriftimart as a grocery manager. He was employed there until the family made the move back to Valentine in 1972. He then owned and operated a grocery store called Jack & Jill, which was located on the corner of Cherry and Second St. After having to close his store, he went to work for Bricker's Office Supply for a short time. He then went to work for Henderson's IGA, where he worked as a store manager until retiring at the age of 82. Working for the Henderson's was a great source of pride for him and he was a dedicated employee for almost 40 years.
One of Walt's greatest joys was his family. Their grandchildren spent summers with Walt & Carol, including a trip to the Black Hills every year. He was a beloved uncle and brother. He was a dedicated Husker fan and an avid golfer. He spent many years traveling to Yuma, Arizona and Mexico with Carol's cousin Bill. He loved playing slot machines and had visited many different Casinos in his travels. He was a kind, considerate, dedicated man who loved his family unconditionally. He loved Jesus and trusted him as his lord and savior. He was the epitome of a what a good man should strive to be. And he will be missed greatly by his family, friends, and community.
Walt went to be with Jesus on February 7 th at Pineview in Valentine. He was preceded in death by his wife Carol; his parents and grandparents; infant daughter Cindy; daughter Marybeth; son Dale; brother Kenny; and sisters Jackie and Shirley.
He is survived by his daughter Cathy (Larry) Duncan of Valentine; brothers Robert Witt & Dick Witt, and sister Judy Mayhew, all of Valentine; grandchildren Chris (Liz) Witt of Harrison, AR; Cindy (Stephen) Williams, Ricky (Chandra) Rhea, and Josh (Megan) Rhea, all of Valentine; Lindsy (Matt) Welch of Norman, OK; Amie (Richard) Baxter of Waldorf, MD; Kent (Phillip) Turbyfill of Columbus, GA; Joslynne Witt, Nathan Witt, and Stephanie Parsons, all of Enid, OK; as well as 16 great grandchildren, 5 great-great grandchildren, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
