Obituary

Willard Emerson Henry, Jr. “JR”

Makizita Wakpa Hoksila – White River Boy

Born August 5, 1980, in Yankton, SD to Willard Henry, Sr. and Irene Rodriguez Bordeaux. He attended St. Francis Indian School and Clovis High School, NM. Following graduation, he proudly enlisted in the United States Army and served his country, including a deployment in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. His military service left a lasting impact on his life.

After returning home, JR worked for the Indian Health Service in Rosebud, South Dakota. He later joined the Rosebud Sioux Tribe, working at the Tribal Ranch before assuming his current role as Lead Compliance Officer for the Tribal Employment & Contracting Rights Office (TECRO).

A passionate rodeo enthusiast, JR loved every aspect of the sport—as a spectator, participant, and mentor. He especially enjoyed sharing his love of horses with others. He was also an avid mud racer, proudly carrying on a family tradition by racing a truck inherited from his uncle.

JR’s ultimate pride and joy were his children and grandchildren. He embraced the role of a devoted single father and modeled the compassion and generosity he learned from his mother. His home and heart were always open to others, and he treated everyone as family. Known for his sense of humor, he brought laughter, love, and encouragement wherever he went. His kindness, concern for others, and ability to make people feel welcome will be remembered by all who knew him.

JR is survived by his children, Chase, Willard III “Emerson”, Gage, Aaron, Shane, Hailey, Harley, Hadi and Kalcie; and by his beloved grandchildren, Santiago, Rowan, Ace and Kaia.

He is also survived by his parents and siblings, Jane, Maria “Mia” (Larry), James (Kim), Jacinto “Ceto”, and Tracy, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, grandchildren, extended family members and special friends.

JR was preceded in death by his grandparents and his siblings Michael, Carmelle and Stacy.

His legacy of service, laughter, generosity, and unwavering love for family will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
